Single Malt, Scotch Whisky - MacDuff 1988
37 YEAR OLD - SINGLE MALT - 55.6% ABV
Tucked away on the rugged northeast coast of Scotland, Macduff Distillery was originally owner by a group of Glasgow brokers and has quietly produced refined Highland single malt since 1960.
The production consists of 1 wash still and 4 spirit stills which is unusual for its asymmetry. Known under the Glen Deveron name in official bottlings, Macduff marries coastal freshness with orchard fruit richness, offering a unique take on the Highland style. With its distinctive still configuration and river-fed water source, the distillery crafts whiskies that balance soft malt, citrus brightness, and gentle maritime character—sought after by blenders and connoisseurs alike.
Aroma
Gentle and refined: baked apple, lemon oil, and chamomile tea
Underlying notes of worn leather, dried apricot, and light almond
Soft oak presence with a hint of beeswax and waxed paper
Palate
Elegant, medium-bodied texture
Flavours of pear compote, honeyed malt, and shortbread
Evolving into orange peel, faint herbal smoke, and light spice (white pepper, ginger)
Finish
Long, subtle, and slightly dry, with notes of oak polish, green apple skin, and a wisp of coastal salinity.
A graceful, quietly complex dram that showcases Macduff’s coastal Highland character with maturity-driven depth. Less aggressive than peated whiskies, more about subtlety and fruit. Ideal for contemplative sipping or pairing with soft cheeses or roasted nuts.
