Single Malt, Scotch Whisky - Glengoyne 2012
13 YEAR OLD - SINGLE MALT- REFILL HOGSHEAD - 63% ABV
Often referred to as the Highland distillery in the Lowlands, Glengoyne sits just north of Glasgow, straddling the Highland Line — with its stillhouse in the Highlands and its warehouses in the Lowlands. Established in 1833, Glengoyne has built a quiet legacy of unpeated, time-rich whisky — known for its gentle character, long fermentation, and slow distillation.
Unlike most Highland malts, Glengoyne refuses to use peat, instead drying its barley with warm air to preserve its delicate, fruity spirit. The distillery’s meticulous approach includes some of the slowest still runs in Scotland, yielding a rich, oily distillate that responds beautifully to oak, especially sherry casks.
In recent decades, Glengoyne has focused on natural colour, sustainability, and thoughtful cask maturation — producing elegant single malts with a hallmark of apple, almond, and soft spice. It's a whisky for those who appreciate subtlety and refinement over smoke and swagger.
Appearance: Pale gold with highlights of sun-bleached straw — a clear expression of spirit-led maturation.
Nose
Bright and vibrant with notes of green apple, pear drops, and crushed barley. Warming alcohol carries hints of lemon curd, vanilla pod, and soft wildflowers, all underpinned by polished oak and a trace of icing sugar.
Palate
Powerful and mouth-coating at full strength. Opens with a burst of orchard fruit and malty sweetness, followed by layers of white pepper, light oak spice, and almond cream. The refill hogshead contributes gentle structure, allowing the fruit-driven core of the distillate to shine.
Finish
Long, dry, and refreshing — with lingering notes of citrus zest, shortbread, and soft cereal warmth. A delicate wave of vanilla and spice lingers with graceful clarity.
Overall
A spirited and precise Glengoyne that showcases the clarity of its unpeated distillate. The refill hogshead offers subtle structure and sweetness without overshadowing the whisky’s orchard fruit and malty core. At 63% ABV, it retains energy and elegance in equal measure — perfect for enthusiasts who appreciate a clean, confident dram at natural strength.
