Single Malt, Scotch Whisky - GlenAllachie 1989
36 YEAR OLD - SINGLE MALT -HOGSHEAD - 41.6%ABV
Nestled in the wooded hills above Aberlour in Speyside, The GlenAllachie Distillery was founded in 1967 by Mackinlay McPherson Ltd, a subsidiary of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries. Built during the height of the whisky boom, GlenAllachie was designed for efficiency, with four stills and gravity-fed production — making it one of the most modern distilleries of its time.
For decades, GlenAllachie remained a quiet contributor to blends such as Clan Campbell, with limited exposure as a single malt. That changed in 2017, when legendary master blender Billy Walker (formerly of BenRiach and GlenDronach) led a private acquisition of the distillery. Under his guidance, GlenAllachie emerged as an independent, craft-driven house of single malts — placing bold wood policies, long fermentation, and traditional cask finishes at its core.
Today, GlenAllachie is celebrated for its richly expressive whiskies, often aged in sherry, PX, and virgin oak casks, and bottled at natural colour and non-chill filtered strength — a modern classic reborn.
Nose
Elegant and mature with layers of dried fig, polished oak, and dark chocolate. Sherry-soaked raisins, pipe tobacco, and walnut oil open into hints of cinnamon and leather-bound books. A touch of orange peel brightens the richness.
Palate
Silky and full-bodied with notes of stewed plum, muscovado sugar, and mocha. Mid-palate reveals nutmeg, clove, and black cherry compote, framed by well-integrated tannins and seasoned oak.
Finish
Long and contemplative — drying with dark fruit, antique wood, and a final whisper of espresso and spice.
A beautifully aged Speyside dram that marries the depth of sherry maturation with GlenAllachie’s hallmark fruit and structure. Rich yet poised, this 1989 vintage is a whisky of quiet authority — ideal for reflection or celebration.
