Single Malt, Scotch Whisky - Bunnahabhain 1989
36 YEAR OLD - SINGLE MALT - 43.5% ABV
Founded in 1881 on the remote northeastern coast of Islay, Bunnahabhain (pronounced Boo-na-ha-ven, meaning “mouth of the river” in Gaelic) was built during the Victorian whisky expansion by the Islay Distillery Company. Isolated and once only accessible by sea, the distillery became a vital part of the island’s whisky trade — its own pier and ships facilitating export to the mainland.
Unlike its Islay neighbours, Bunnahabhain carved out a distinct identity by producing a lightly peated or often unpeated spirit — favouring a style defined by soft coastal character, rich malt, and fruity elegance. Over the years, its spirit found a home in renowned blends like Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark.
In recent decades, Bunnahabhain has seen a renaissance as a single malt, with its natural presentation (non-chill filtered, natural colour) and commitment to coastal maturation winning over whisky lovers. Today, its reputation rests on a balance of maritime freshness, malt-driven depth, and sherry or refill cask nuance.
Nose
Clean and lifted, with soft coastal salinity, green apple skin, and sweet barley. Notes of lemon blossom, hazelnut shell, and honeycomb emerge with time. Elegant and ethereal.
Palate
Supple and balanced, with a core of sweet cereal, white orchard fruits, and salted toffee. Hints of dried herbs and chamomile drift alongside barley sugar, almond cream, and faint citrus oil.
Finish
Long, pure, and refreshing — softly mineral with lingering notes of vanilla pod, sea spray, and warm oak.
A sublime example of refill cask maturation — showcasing the graceful maturity of Bunnahabhain's distillate rather than dominant oak. Subtle complexity, coastal brightness, and aged elegance make this a connoisseur’s Islay — one that whispers, not shouts.
