Distinct Distillers: Shortlisted for the International Wine & Spirits Green Trophy 2024
Our Journey Towards Sustainable Spirits Recognition
We are excited to share that Distinct Distillers has been shortlisted for the prestigious IWSC Green Spirit Initiative, recognising our groundbreaking efforts in sustainable spirits production. This honour highlights our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint while contributing to regenerative farming practices across the UK.
Pioneering a Circular Economy in Distilling
When it comes to sustainability in distilling, attention often focuses on renewable energy, carbon emissions, and alternative packaging. While crucial, there is an even more pressing, silent crisis we are determined to address: soil health.
Soil is one of our greatest assets. Healthy soil supports 95% of global food production, houses over 25% of the world’s biodiversity, and stores three times more carbon than the atmosphere. Unfortunately, unsustainable farming is rapidly degrading soil health. Experts warn that by 2050, we could lose up to 90% of topsoil, reducing global food production by 30%, with catastrophic consequences.
Our innovative spirits production integrates regenerative agriculture into the process by distilling rum from sugar cane molasses. This circular economy approach reduces waste and transforms it into valuable resources that improve soil health.
Sustainable Spirits and Regenerative Farming: A Perfect Pairing
With over 50 years of expertise in agriculture and crop nutrition, we partnered with QLF Agronomy to develop a revolutionary fertiliser from fermented waste, now used to enhance soil health and crop yields nationwide.
This fertiliser feeds soil microbes rather than plants directly, making it more sustainable than synthetic alternatives. The benefits include:
- Improved Crop Yield & Quality: Nutrients become more accessible to plants.
- Enhanced Soil Fertility: Reduces dependence on synthetic fertilisers.
- Carbon Sequestration: Turns soil into a carbon sink.
- Increased Biodiversity: Boosts plant resilience and diversity.
To date, over 200,000 litres of fermented waste have been repurposed, improving crops like Wheat, Maize, and Potatoes across the UK. The more rum we produce, the more we contribute to a healthier, sustainable future for UK farming.
Closing the Loop: Commitment to Sustainable Production
Our sustainability efforts extend beyond regenerative farming. Key initiatives include:
- Heat Recovery: Capturing up to 77% of energy from distilling with innovative systems.
- Water Reuse: Recycling cooling water to reduce local water system pressure.
- Molasses Distribution: Partnering with a leading importer to reduce environmental impact through existing networks.
A Vision for a Low-Waste Future
At Distinct Distillers, waste is an opportunity. By upcycling by-products and collaborating across industries, we’re building a regenerative economy. Our mission to craft premium spirits is inseparable from our goal to nurture the planet. We’re honoured to be recognised by the IWSC Green Spirit Initiative for these efforts.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to crafting world-class spirits while protecting and restoring soil health, ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
